Paul Escher pulled away in the final 250 meters to win the mile and
Jake Campbell won the 3000 with a fast final lap at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday.
Escher held a position in the front pack for much of the race, and moved into first with little more than 300 meters remaining, and pulled away from the field over the rest of the race to win in 4:10.19. Ian McDonald was the runner-up, finishing two seconds behind Escher in 4:12.07.
Grant Wintheiser led for the entire 3000 meter race, until Campbell took the lead with 50 meters remaining to win the national title. Campbell's time of 8:10.55 was the fastest Divison III time in the nation this year. Wintheiser held off a surging Josh Thorson (UW-Eau Claire) to finish second with a time of 8:11.29.
In addition to his indidividual title in the 3000, Campbell placed fourth in the 5000 on Friday afternoon with a time of 14:32.55. Campbell hovered between second and sixth over the first 4000 meters, and held his position over the final 1000 to finish fourth. Travis Morrison, a junior from North Central College, won the event in a time of 14:23.94.
Despite having only three athletes competing, the Oles accumulated a total of 33 points, which put them fourth in the team standing. UW-Eau Claire won their first NCAA Indoor title with a total of 62 points.
The outdoor season for St. Olaf begins at Hamline University on April 11th.
