MOORHEAD, Minn. - The University of St. Thomas held off the St. Olaf men's track and field team on the second and final day of the MIAC Indoor Championships to win its 31st consecutive title.
The Oles finished with a total of 142 points, 20 behind champion St. Thomas.
Grant Wintheiser won another MIAC title with his victory in the 3000, crossing the line in 8:25.51, a new meet record. Fellow Ole Phillip Meyer was not far behind in second with a time of 8:27.68.
The Oles added another individual MIAC champion with Kevin Skrip winning the 600 with a time of 1:22.10. Skrip held off a trio of sophomores who finished second through fourth behind him.
In the 1000, Paul Escher finished second for the second year in a row. Carleton's Donson Cook-Gallardo made a move with 100 meters remaining to win the event with a time of 2:28.73. Joe Coffey, Sean Bjork, and Jacob Eggers finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively to score for the Oles after Escher.
In the throwing events, Ethan Lunning placed seventh in both the weight throw (13.96 meters) and the shot put (14.54 meters) to give the Oles four additional points in the team score.
Wintheiser, Escher and Jake Campbell will all compete next weekend in North Carolina at the NCAA Division 3 Championships. The outdoor season will begin on April 11th at Hamline University.
