Phillip Meyer broke Malcolm Richards's 10 year old St. Olaf record in the 10000 on Thursday night at the Drake Relays.
Meyer's time of 30:08.13 was almost ten seconds faster than the previous school record, and also gives him the second fastest time in Division III competition this year. Â Meyer finished fifth in a race that was composed of mostly Division I athletes.
Jake Campbell and
Grant Wintheiser competed later in the evening in the 5000, placing sixth and seventh respectively. Â For Campbell, the final time of 14:17.58 marked a new career best, the second fastest time in Ole history (behind Wintheiser), as well as a national qualifying time for the NCAA Division III national championships. Â For Wintheiser, his time of 4:19.22 represents a very strong return from an injury that has kept him out of outdoor competition this year. Â Remarkably, Wintheiser's time is only five seconds slower than his time at this race last year, despite dealing with the obstacle of injury.
Additionally, Campbell and Wintheiser now sit second and third among the top 5000 meter performances in Division III this year.Â
The St. Olaf men's track team competes next on Saturday in Winona at the Saint Mary's Open.
