COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The St. Olaf men's track and field team surged to finish third at the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which wrapped up Saturday at Saint John's University.Â
St. Thomas won its fifth straight MIAC title while host Saint John's was second.
The Oles did the bulk of their scoring in the 1,500. St. Olaf had seven of the 12 runners in the final and earned 27 team points as
Jake Campbell (4:07.64),
Paul Escher (4:08.03) and
Joe Coffey (4:08.77) went 1-2-3.
William Anderson was sixth (4:14.48),
Tayler Aarness seventh (4:15.42) while
Keith Ketola was just outside the scoring mark in ninth (4:16.34).
Campbell raced later in the day in the 5,000 and finished second in 15:08.23 as one of three Oles who scored in the race. Coffey was third (15:12.77) and
Paul Timm (15:15.88) fifth.
Kevin Skrip took home the Oles' other individual title with his victory in the 800. His 1:56.70 was almost five seconds better than his time in the prelims.
Jacob Eggers also scored for St. Olaf in the event with his 1:59.51, which was good for seventh.
Senior
James McFarlin had a productive Saturday as he was third in both the 400 (49.27) and 200 (22.09). Â
Timm had a third place finish to his credit too, with his 9:39.72 in the 3,000 steeplechase.Â
Other scorers
On Friday,
Adam Wood finished seventh in the 10,000. On Saturday, Robbie Holmes scored with his seventh place finish in the 400 hurdles. The Oles' lone scorer in the field events was
Ethan Lunning, who was sixth in the hammer.
Relays
The Oles capped the day with an exciting, second place finish in the 4x400. McFarlin, Joey Pugh, Stets and Skrip finished just .3 seconds behind the winning squad from Bethel.Â
St. Olaf finished fourth in a tightly-contested 4x100 relay with
Justin Elstad, McFarlin, Skrip and Stets. The Oles came in a 42.58, just .35 seconds off UST's winning pace.Â
