Campbell wins national title, Escher second in 1,500 as Oles finish 10th

WAVERLY, Iowa - Jake Campbell won an individual national title and Paul Escher was second as four St. Olaf runners competed in the 1,500 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships to give the Oles a 10th place finish.

Campbell and Escher traded leads early in the race. Campbell (3:49.27) pulled ahead and edged Escher (3:49.55), the defending national champ, in a finish where the top four runners were within .64 seconds of each other. The Oles' Joe Coffey (3:50.91) also scored in the event with his sixth place effort while Sean Bjork (3:55.51), the Oles' fourth qualifier in the event, was 11th. 

UW-La Crosse won the team national championship with 41 points. UW-Eau Claire was second (33), Monmouth (33) third and UW-Platteville fourth (31). The Oles were one of four schools with 21 points. The MIAC was represented with Augsburg and Saint John's coming in at 24th overall, each with 10 points.
