Beal, a native of St. Louis Park, Minn., was a four-year letter winner in both football and baseball at St.Olaf and was named Most Valuable Player for both sports. He was baseball team co-captain for two years and football co-capiainĀ his senior season, earned multiple all-conference selections in baseball, and during his senior year was All Midwest Conference in football and was named to the Luthern All-American football team. Beal played professional baseball following graduation, then enrolled in medical school in 1979. A surgical residency at the U of M Hospital led to a critical care fellowship, and eventually to a position at the U as a teacher of surgery residents (his students named him "Resident Teacher of hte Year" in 1986, 1987, and 1988). Beal now lives in Mankato minn., where is a general surgeon.
