Carl Ebeling was a star track and field student-athlete at St. Olaf in the mid- 1980s. Ebeling in 1985 earned All-America honors as a senior in the triple jump. In that season he was the MIAC outdoor triple jump champion and a national qualifier in the high jump. His 48’3” triple jump ranked second on the school’s all-time list at the time. As a high jumper, he was twice MIAC indoor champion (1983, 1984) as he collected school records of 6’10” (outdoor) and 7’0” (indoor). In 1993, Ebeling added a B.S. in geology from Portland State University before picking up a M.S. from Northwestern University in 2009. Since 2012 he has worked as a senior development engineer for Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California-San Diego.
