A four-year letter winner in track and field, Charlie Novak earned All-American honors in 1974-76 and was the national pole vault champion in 1975. The recipient of a NCAA post graduate scholarship award, Novak went to medical school at the University of Minnesota, then completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Hawaii in 1985. He is a member of the Honorary Fellow American Psychiatric Association and the recipient of the Distinguished Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Novak lives with his family in Boise, Idaho, where he serves as the clinical director for Intermountain Hospital.
