Detra Nelson Cleven was a dominant swimmer at St. Olaf. A three-time letter winner, she earned All-America honors
in each of the three seasons she competed and was team co-captain and MVP as a senior in the 1990-91 season. When she graduated, she held school records in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and was a part of the Oles’ record-setting 400 medley relay team. Her 100 and 200 breaststroke marks remain in the top 10 in school history, seventh and eighth, while her 200 individual medley time is sixth. Cleven has continued her competitive swimming career, where she has been a United States Master national qualifier each of the last three seasons (2011-13). She placed in the top 10 in six swimming events -- 50 and 100 butterfly, 100 and 200 breaststroke, 100 and 200 individual medley -- at the national championships in those seasons. She ranked 10th in the country in the 50 breaststroke in the 40-44 age group in 2013 and ranks eighth in the 50 butterfly in 2014. Cleven is senior vice president at Bank of Tennessee. She lives in Kingsport, Tenn., with husband Curtis and children Blake and Annika.
