Gene Christensen '41 came to St. Olaf from Northfield High School as a two time Minnesota high school golf champion. He earned three letters in basketball, but his passion was golf. He was the St. Olaf golf team's MVP four times, was a varsity captain for three years and "coach" his junior and senior years. He visited the conference championships four times and finished third or better in each appearance. He was a Minnesota State Amateur semi-finalist and won the Northfield City Tournament many times. The same year he graduated from St. Olaf, he won the San Diego County Amateur and the Resorters Tournament. Following graduation, Gene was the State Amateur runner up and qualified for the National Amateur. He was also the Minnesota State Best Ball Champion and Minnesota Golf Association's Senior Player of the Year. Gene served as a Navel Officer in WWII for three and a half years. He founded the Christensen Insurance Agency, now run by his son, Bruce, and son-in-law Cal. Gene passed away in 2003.
