Janet Hengel Anderson was a two-time All-American pole vaulter for the Oles and took part in the first-ever pole vault competition at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships.
Hengel earned All-American honors in the pole vault after finishing tied for fifth at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships as a junior and seventh at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships as a senior.
A four-time national qualifier, Hengel qualified for the indoor and outdoor national meets in both 2000 and 2001. In addition to the All-American finishes, she placed 12th indoors in 2000 at the first-ever pole vault competition at the national meet and 11th outdoors in 2001.
Hengel was a three-time MIAC champion in the pole vault, winning indoors and outdoors in 2000 and outdoors the following year. She narrowly missed out on another MIAC title in the event, finishing second on misses indoors as a senior.
Hengel set a then-program and MIAC record at the indoor conference championships in 2000, clearing 11’ 1/4”, before clearing 11’ 2 1/4” the next year to break both of her own records.
Her mark of 11’2 1/4”is tied for second on St. Olaf’s indoor all-time top-10 list, while her mark of 11’6 1/2”is third on the outdoor list.
She also competed in the 400-meter hurdles and ranks eighth on St. Olaf’s all-time list in the event (1:04.89). Hengel was part of the 4x100-meter relay that owns the 10th-fastest time in school history (49.94) set in 1999.
