The 2010 indoor shot put national champion, John Schantzen '10 is one of eight Oles to win an individual national title in men's track and field and was an all-conference offensive lineman for St. Olaf's football team. Schantzen won the lone national title in the throws in program history with a still-standing school-record throw of 17.37 meters (57'), which came on the final throw with the national title already wrapped up. The five-time national qualifier was a three-time All-American in the shot put, adding a third-place finish outdoors in 2009 and a seventh-place finish indoors in 2008 to the national title.
A five-time MIAC shot put champion and two-time MIAC shot put runner-up, Schantzen also holds the outdoor school record in the event at 17.54 meters (57' 6 ½") and ranks sixth on St. Olaf's all-time indoor list in the weight throw (15.53m, 50' 11 ½"). He was also a three-year starter on the offensive line for St. Olaf and earned Second Team All-MIAC honors in 2008, while helping the Oles to a 27-13 overall record during his career. In 2010, Schantzen was named the inaugural recipient of the St. Olaf Athletic Department's Dave Hauck Award and received the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
