Nelson Westby was a four-time national champion and two-time MIAC Swimmer of the Year at St. Olaf from 2006-09.

Westby won national championships in the 200-yard individual medley in each of his final three seasons, as well as the 200-yard breaststroke as a senior. The 20-time All-American is one of three Oles to be named MIAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year and the only one to do it twice (2007, 2009).

Westby holds MIAC individual records in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.48, 2009), 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.86, 2008) and 200-yard individual medley (1:48.54, 2009) and was part of the MIAC record-holding 200-yard medley relay (1:29.82, 2009).

His efforts helped the Oles to MIAC championships in 2007 and 2009 and top-10 national finishes in all four of his seasons.

One of just 37 student-athletes in the history of NCAA Division III to win at least three national titles in the same event, Westby qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trails for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Upon graduating from St. Olaf with a double major in history and Russian area studies, Westby continued to train in Charlotte, N.C. for the 2012 Olympic Trails for the Olympic Games in London.

He trained full time with Swim MAC’s Team Elite from 2009-12 and competed internationally multiple times, including the 2011 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Dubai, where he placed third in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter breaststroke. Additionally, Westby won three USA National Titles while at Swim MAC.
