MOORHEAD, Minn. – Host Concordia College (Minn.) scored on just its second shot on goal of the game to defeat the St. Olaf College women's soccer team, 1-0, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game.
Just 2:01 into the second overtime, Kalli Baarstad found the back of the net for the only goal of the game for Concordia (6-5-3, 2-3-2 MIAC). Baarstad's goal brought an end to a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) for St. Olaf (8-3-2, 5-2-1), which was ranked No. 10 in this week's United Soccer Coaches North Region rankings.
In a game that saw the Oles outshoot the Cobbers by an 18-5 margin, Concordia got an 11-save effort from Maddy Reed to extend the game into overtime, where Baarstad's goal decided the game. Reed finished the game with 12 saves for the Cobbers, while
Brynne Davis faced just two shots on goal for the Oles.
Reed made five saves in the first half, including three in the opening 3:56, as St. Olaf outshot Concordia by an 8-0 count in the opening 45 minutes. Reid got help from the woodwork 30 minutes into the game when senior
Kaylyn Billmeyer hit the cross bar, nearly giving the Oles the lead.
St. Olaf held Concordia without a shot until Rachel Nemer's shot was blocked in the 62 minute and Baarstad's 72nd-minute effort was the Cobbers' first shot on goal of the afternoon. Reed had six more saves in the second half and another in the first overtime on a 97th-minute effort by
Mackenzie Schoustra to set up Baarstad's winner.
The Oles look to rebound with a non-conference game against Grinnell College on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
