Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 8/10 Gustavus' big third period sinks women's hockey

ST. PETER, Minn. – No. 8/10 Gustavus Adolphus College broke open a scoreless game with four third-period goals on its way to a 4-1 victory over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play.

A night after falling 1-0, St. Olaf (0-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) again kept Gustavus (3-0-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) in check through two periods, but the Gusties scored three times in the first 5:22 of the third period and went on to complete the weekend sweep. Senior Maddy Johnson scored her second goal of the season for the Oles with a late shorthanded tally.

Despite being outshot 32-6 through 40 minutes, the Oles and junior goaltender Sam Klemann kept the Gusties off the board through two periods. Just 1:14 into the third period, however, Gustavus broke the deadlock on a goal by Grace Schulte. A little over three minutes later, the Gusties doubled their advantage on a power-play goal by Kayla Vrieze.

Lilia Scheid scored the other two goals for the Gusties, getting her first of the afternoon 44 seconds after Vrieze's tally to push the Gustavus lead to 3-0. Scheid added her second and her team's fourth goal at 13:02 of the third.

Johnson closed the game's scoring at 14:39 of the third period, scoring shorthanded from Johanna Glaaser to get the Oles on the board.

Amanda DiNella made 12 saves to pick up the win for Gustavus. Klemann recorded 35 saves on 38 shots faced for the Oles in 45:22 before Mae Moris stopped 13-of-14 shots over the final 14:38 in her first action of the season.

St. Olaf returns to action on Friday, Nov. 16 when it hosts the College of Saint Benedict at 7:30 p.m. at Northfield Ice Arena.
