Third-quarter run lifts women's basketball to victory over Martin Luther

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A 14-7 run in the third quarter lifted the St. Olaf College women's basketball team to a 68-42 non-conference victory over Martin Luther College Tuesday evening at Skoglund Center.

A layup by junior Britta Koenen with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter started a run for St. Olaf (1-3) as they would finish the quarter 51-35 over Martin Luther (0-4) to secure the victory.  First year K'Lynn Lewis recorded a career-high 16 points and six rebounds, including a four-point play after she was fouled and sank the three in the Oles' third-quarter run.

St. Olaf took its largest lead of 17 in the third quarter after junior Ella Skrien posted a steal and finished the breakaway layup.  The Oles outscored Knights 18-11 in the third quarter and 17-7 in the fourth to extend the lead in a 26-point victory.

Senior Makenna Ash added 14 points, 12 rebounds, and two steals for St. Olaf and Koenen collected nine points, four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.

In the first half the Oles held Martin Luther to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor as St. Olaf shot 37.1 percent from the floor and brought down 26 rebounds compared to just 17 from the Knights.

St. Olaf started the game on an 8-1 run that included a jumper from sophomore Keegan Mulvihill and a three-pointer from Lewis.  The Knights answered with back-to-back three-pointers to climb within one at 8-7, but two Ole three-pointers from first year Rose Bauernfeind and Skrien extended the lead to 18-11 at the end of the quarter.

Skrien found first year Camryn Scott in the paint for a basket and extended the Oles lead to 23-11 with 6:51 remaining in the second quarter. A 6-0 run by Martin Luther brought the Knights within six at 25-19.  St. Olaf took a nine-point lead to end the half after Lewis' three-point play

After St. Olaf's third quarter run, the Oles continued to extend its lead in the fourth quarter starting with a steal from Bauernfeind and a layup from Ash. Junior Allyson Fuller sank back-to-back jumpers for St. Olaf to give the Oles a 64-37 lead, which tied for the largest lead of the game.

St. Olaf forced 22 Martin Luther turnovers, scoring 25 points off turnovers, and collected 12 fast break points.

The Oles travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic where they play Colorado College on Friday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. and Johnson & Wales Saturday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
