Makenna Ash combined for 48 points, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell to St. Kate's, 67-60, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Saturday afternoon at the Butler Center.
With 9:43 remaining in the contest, St. Olaf (4-5, 2-1 MIAC) climbed within four after a three-pointer from junior
Ella Skrien, but St. Kate's (4-4, 2-1 MIAC) answered with a 9-2 run to take an 11-point lead and remained on top, as they snapped the Oles three-game winning streak.
Lewis led the Oles with 20 points, marking her sixth contest in a row scoring in double figures. Ash reached double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds and Koenen registered 13 points and nine rebounds.
After St. Kate's opened the contest on an 11-2 run, forcing a timeout by the Oles, St. Olaf climbed back within one as Ash finished a basket to end the first quarter at 15-14.
St. Olaf held St. Kate's to one field goal in the last 4:52 of the first quarter, while the Oles scored seven-straight points, including baskets from Lewis and Ash in the final 22 seconds of the period.
The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run, taking an eight-point lead at 24-16. St. Olaf came back within four after a jumper from sophomore
Keegan Mulvihill and a basket from Koenen with 5:16 remaining in the half as the Oles trailed by just two at 24-22.
With 1:05 left in the second quarter, Koenen finished a jumper that accounted for the Oles final points of the first half, bringing St. Olaf within five heading into the half at 32-27.
St. Olaf tied the score, 34-34, at 6:00 in the third quarter when Lewis sank a three-pointer from Ash. St. Kate's regained the lead, but Koenen brought St. Olaf back within two at 41-39 and 2:38 remaining in the third quarter. A free throw from Katie Benjamin extended the Wildcats' lead to 47-40 at the end of the third period.
St. Kate's extended its lead to nine with 4:58 remaining in the contest after a basket from Benjamin. A pair of free throws from Lewis made the score 49-45 before the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 11.
Skrien drained her second three-point of the quarter with 1:08 remaining in the contest, bringing St. Olaf within eight at 62-54. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the final quarter, St. Olaf was within five points following a three-pointer from Lewis with 36 seconds remaining in the contest, but the Wildcats stayed on top.
The Oles are back to action Wednesday, Dec. 12 as they travel to St. Peter, Minn. for a MIAC contest against Gustavus Adolphus College beginning at 7 p.m.
