Softball: Oles top Mules 4-2, Graf shuts out No. 18 Warkhawks 2-0

CLERMONT, Fla. - The St. Olaf softball team (10-6) started a doubleheader with a 4-2 win over Colby College (0-7), after which Julie Graf pitched a one-hit shutout to defeat No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (7-7) on Thursday.

The Oles took advantage of a three-run second inning to take a 4-2 win over the Mules.

The Mules struck first as Ella Hommeyer stole home in the first inning.

Down 1-0 with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the second, Jordan Melz singled to put the Oles on the board. Kate Arneson followed Melz and gave St. Olaf the lead with a two-run double.

Hommeyer hit an RBI single in the in the bottom of the second for the Mules to cut the Oles' lead to one run.

Emily Carr restored the Oles' two-run lead with an RBI triple in the fourth.

Rachel Niederkorn (3-1) started for the Oles, giving up two runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings while striking out nine.

Hannah Matthies had a 3-for-3 day at the plate, adding a walk to reach base in every plate appearance.

Arneson's two RBI led the Oles, going 2-for-4.

Graf (6-5) pitched a one-hit shutout over the No. 18 ranked Warhawks in a 2-0 win for the Oles.

Graf allowed a hit and two walks while striking out eight in the complete game effort.

Kelly Berglund had the only hit for the Warhawks, reaching first on a bunt in the fifth inning to end Graf's no-hit bid.

At the plate, Graf was 3-for-3 and had the only RBI for the Oles on a single in the sixth inning.

Arneson and Ally Bode each had two hits for the Oles. Arneson scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

Next up for the Oles is a return to Minnesota for their home opener against Saint Mary's University on Wednesday.
