Ella Skrien each reached double figures and combined for 41 points, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell to Augsburg University, 74-59, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Saturday afternoon in Skoglund Center.
Despite St. Olaf (6-11, 3-7) scoring even with Augsburg (14-3, 9-1) in the second and third quarter, the Auggies forced eight Ole turnovers in the first quarter and outscored St. Olaf, 26-13, in the period to take an early lead in the game, and they would hold it for the remainder of the contest.
Ash posted a double-double with 17 rebounds and 15 points, Lewis added 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Skrien collected 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Keegan Mulvihill registered nine points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Oles.
Augsburg jumped out to a 15-3 lead with 4:39 remaining in the first period after Tamira McLemore sank a three-pointer. The Auggies extended their lead to as much as 17 points before the Oles cut the Augsburg lead to 11 points after a pair of free throws from Mulvihill.
The Oles scored even with Augsburg in the second period with both teams posting 16 second-quarter points. After a layup from Mulvihill with 3:54 remaining in the first half, St. Olaf cut their deficit to 12. In the last minute of the half, a jumper from Arianna Jones extended the Auggies lead to 15, but Mulvhill finished a layup in the final seconds of the period to make the score 42-29 heading into the second half.
Augsburg kept their lead in double figures in the third period, extending it to as much as 18 points after McLemore finished a layup inside. A pair of free throws from Lewis brought the Oles within 10 points of the Auggies, but Augsburg would enter into the final period with a 13-point lead after a three throw from Jen Masello.
With 8:22 remaining in the contest, a basket from Skrien made the score 60-50, in favor of Augsburg, but the Auggies answered with a 14-5 run and took a 19-point lead with 3:26 to go, and remained on top for the rest of the contest.
Despite the Oles outrebounding the Auggies 47-37, St. Olaf committed 22 turnovers compared to just 11 from Augsburg and the Auggies posted 24 points off of turnovers in the game.
St. Olaf is back to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, as they host Gustavus Adolphus in a MIAC contest at Skoglund Center beginning at 7 p.m.
