CSB tops women's hockey in non-conference game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict broke open a 2-1 game with four third-period goals to defeat the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, 6-1, in a non-conference matchup between Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foes on Sunday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Saint Benedict (5-5-1) built a 2-0 lead inside the final minute of the second, but senior Maddy Johnson scored with 16 seconds to go in the period to get St. Olaf (0-10-1) within a goal after two. The Bennies, however, tallied four goals in the final 20 minutes to pull away.

CSB outshot St. Olaf by a 14-3 count in the first period, but junior Sam Klemann turned aside all 14 shots she faced to keep the game scoreless. The Oles also killed off a pair of minor penalties in the first period, while the Bennies killed off one of their own.

The visitors broke through at 4:01 of the second period on a goal by Maddie Dockry off an assist from Courtney Conlin, who had two goals and an assist on the afternoon. Both teams scored in the final minute of the middle period, with Bria Ferns doubling CSB's lead at 19:10 before Johnson got the Oles on the board.

The senior was on hand to tip in a shot from the left circle by classmate Kalli McCullen in front of the net, with junior Johanna Glaaser also earning an assist. The power-play goal was St. Olaf's fourth in the last six games after not registering one in the first five games of the winter.

In the third, CSB ran away with the victory by scoring four times. Julia Pias re-established her team's two-goal lead at 4:37, Conlin netted two goals in the span of 50 seconds and Shelby Schneider grabbed her first of the season to cap the scoring.

Klemann finished the game with 35 saves, marking her third-straight game with at least 35 stops, while Maggie Gilchrist posted 17 saves for CSB in her first-career start.

St. Olaf travels to ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday, Jan. 8 for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Blugolds at Hobbs Ice Center.
