Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bash wins it late in second overtime, women's soccer tops Saint Mary's

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Claire Bash scored her second goal of the game with just 1:25 remaining in the second overtime to give the St. Olaf College women's soccer team a 4-3 victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

After Saint Mary's (4-5-0, 0-4-0 MIAC) scored with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, Bash netted the winner late in the second overtime to give St. Olaf (6-3-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) its second overtime conference win of the season. Jordyn Matthews scored all three goals for the Cardinals in the loss.

In addition to Bash's two goals, sophomores Hayley Hoffmann and Grace Maxwell scored goals for the Oles. The two-goal performance was the second of Bash's career.

Hoffmann started the scoring in the 15th minute, scoring her third of the year by putting in a loose ball in the box shortly after Annie Reichhoff hit the crossbar with a header. The lead lasted 10 minutes until Matthews tied the game in the 25th minute with her first of the game.

A little more than eight minutes later, Matthews gave Saint Mary's its only lead of the game by picking out the lower-left corner after being played in through the middle. St. Olaf answered Matthews' second goal four minutes later in the 37th minute, as Bash converted from the penalty spot following a handball in the Cardinals' box.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until the 84th minute when Maxwell flicked a header over the Saint Mary's keeper from a chipped ball from the top of the box by first year Rachel Tanner. With the clock winding down in regulation, Matthews sent the game to overtime by curling the ball into the lower-right corner from the top of the box.

Saint Mary's held a 26-16 advantage in shots in the game, which included an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Junior Brynne Davis earned her sixth victory of the season with five saves in 87:36 in goal, while first year Grace Sprangers made three stops in 21:59 in the first half.

St. Olaf visits Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
