ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - Sophomore
K'Lynn Lewis had a career-high 32 points and led the St. Olaf College women's basketball team to an 82-73 victory against Buena Vista at the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening.
Lewis' game-high 32 points marked the first 30-point game by an Ole since
Makenna Ash recorded 31 on Feb. 15, 2017 against Carleton and was the fourth game of her career with at least 20 points.
St. Olaf (2-1) outscored Buena Vista (0-2), 64-40, in the first three quarters and held on despite a 33-point fourth quarter by the Beavers. The Oles forced 27 turnovers and held Buena Vista to 35 percent shooting in the game.
In addition to Lewis' 32 points, junior
Keegan Mulvihill reached double figures with 14 points while adding four rebounds and three assists. First year
Sophie Olmen had a career-high 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists. Senior
Ella Skrien totaled 10 points, six rebounds, and led the team with five assists.
St. Olaf went on an 11-0 run after Buena Vista scored the first basket of the game to take the lead at 11-2 with 6:46 to left in the first period. Layups from Olmen and Lewis extended the lead to 11 with two and a half minutes left in the quarter, but the Beavers got within four points at the end of the period.
St. Olaf held the Beavers scoreless for the first 4:13 of the second period, while scoring 11-straight points. The 11-0 run included six-straight points from Mulvihill, followed by a three-pointer from Lewis to make the score 30-15 with 6:03 to go before halftime.
With 3:46 left in the half, the Oles led, 36-19, before Buena Vista scored the next seven points to get within 10, but St. Olaf would hold a 10-point lead heading into the second half.
St. Olaf opened the third period with an 18-4 run and outscored the Beavers, 23-9, in the period to extend its lead to as many as 24 points. Lewis had 12 points in the period and the Oles forced 11 turnovers in the quarter to help the Oles take a 24-point lead into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Beavers went on an 18-3 run and got back within nine after Destiny Einerwold sank a pair of free throws midway through the quarter. Buena Vista continued to cut the deficit and got within single digits of the Oles at the 4:13 mark before a pair of free throws from Olmen pushed the St. Olaf lead back to 11.
The Beavers got within five, 76-71, with 1:12 to go, but Mulvihill answered with a bucket 25 seconds later. Olmen and Lewis each knocked down a pair of free throws in the final :28 to secure the win for the Oles, who held advantages of 40-24 in points in the paint and 23-14 in bench scoring in the victory.
St. Olaf plays its second game of the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Minnesota Morris at 1 p.m.
