No. 2/3 Tommies blank women's hockey

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Seven different skaters scored for the No. 2/3-ranked University of St. Thomas, as the Tommies blanked the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, 8-0, on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Rachel Werdin scored twice for St. Thomas (17-0-2, 11-0-2 MIAC) and 12 Tommies tallied at least one point, as the visitors remained the lone unbeaten women's team in NCAA Division III. Goaltender Mackenzie Torpy made 14 saves to shut out St. Olaf (0-18-2, 0-11-2 MIAC) for her nation-leading 10th shutout of the season.

The game was St. Olaf's ninth of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent and the No. 2/3 Tommies were the Oles' highest-ranked opponent since taking on No. 2 Gustavus on Feb. 15-16, 2013.

Demi Cooper opened the scoring for St. Thomas at 7:42 of the first period with an unassisted goal. The Tommies' lead remained 1-0 until Allison Parnell scored with 1:29 remaining in the opening period to give St. Thomas a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Tommies netted four goals in the span of 7:19 in the first 10:47 of the second period to establish a 6-0 lead after two. Werdin and Anna Solheim scored 2:02 apart in the first six minutes of the period before Sarah Moy and Alyssa Wallace got goals 1:11 apart midway through the second.

Werdin grabbed her second of the night unassisted just 14 seconds into the third and Emily Nadeau capped the scoring at 7:04 for the visitors.

Junior Sam Klemann made 23 saves over the first 30:47 of the game for St. Olaf, while first year Grace Boswell-Healey made 13 saves in the final 29:13.

The Oles and Tommies conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
