Women's hockey drops series opener at Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. – Host Bethel University used a three-goal first period to record a 6-1 victory over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team on Friday evening at Schwan Super Rink.

Bethel (6-12-3, 3-9-3 MIAC) scored three times in the span of a little over 10 minutes in the opening period and got multi-point nights from each member of its top line. First years Maddie Anderson and Jackie LaFaive connected on the lone goal of the night for St. Olaf (0-20-2, 0-13-2 MIAC), with Anderson collecting her fourth goal of the season.

Courtney Johnston scored a pair of goals on the night for the Royals, who got a goal and two assists from Bri Stafne and three assists from Bailey Thompson.

Midway through the first period, Bethel got the scoring started on a Cali Pearcy goal at 9:22 that was set up by Stafne and Thompson. Stafne got a goal of her own shorthanded just less than three minutes later to double the Royals' lead before Johnston capped the three-goal first period with just 10 seconds remaining.

Emma Ness stretched the Bethel lead to 4-0 just 1:35 into the second period, but Anderson replied for St. Olaf just 14 seconds later from LaFaive. Anderson's four goals this season put her in a tie with LaFaive for second on the team.

Johnston gave the Royals their second four-goal lead of the night at 5-1 at 16:16 of the second period with a power-play goal. Payton Olson scored the only goal of the final 20 minutes at 12:56 of the third to close out the scoring.

Mallory Tidona earned the win in net for the Royals by making eight saves over the first two periods. Claire Belkholm had six saves in the third, as Bethel outshot St. Olaf 48-15 in the game. Kaitlyn Pellicci made 42 saves, one shy of her season high, between the pipes for the Oles.

St. Olaf hosts Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
