Ash reaches 1,000-point milestone, women's basketball drops home contest to Saint Benedict

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Makenna Ash reached the 1,000-point milestone for her career, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team felll to the College of Saint Benedict, 74-71, on Saturday evening at Skoglund Center.

Ash pulled up for a short jumper on the right baseline with 4:08 remaining in the second quarter to become the fifth student-athlete since 1990 to reach the 1,000-point mark. The senior, who also holds the program's all-time rebounding record, had 10 points and 24 rebounds in the game, with the 24 rebounds marking the most rebounds in a game by an Ole since 2000.

St. Olaf (8-15, 5-11 MIAC) did not trail in the game until Saint Benedict (14-9, 10-6 MIAC) used a 10-2 run to turn a 43-37 deficit into a 47-45 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. That was the only lead change of the games, as the Bennies led the rest of the way after shooting 50.0 percent from the field in the second half.

First year K'Lynn Lewis knocked down four three-pointers on her way to a team-high 17 points to go with six assists. Lewis and Ash were joined in double figures by three other Oles, including first year Camryn Scott, who collected a career-high 13 points. Keegan Mulvihill and Britta Koenen had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Megan Thompson led CSB with 24 points on 8-for-17 shooting and was one of five Bennies in double figures. Alex Johnson had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Maddie Schmitz, Sidney Schiffler, and McKenzie Holgate each scored 10 points.

St. Olaf held Saint Ben's to one point over the final 3:44 of the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead into the second. After trailing by as many as eight, CSB closed the gap to one, 33-32, with 58 seconds to go in the second quarter thanks to a quick 6-0 run, but a Lewis three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Oles a 36-32 lead at halftime.

Lewis started the second half with another three-pointer to quickly push St. Olaf's lead back to seven before the visitors took control later in the quarter. A layup by Thompson with 2:01 remaining in the third gave CSB its first lead of the game.

In the fourth, three-pointers by Schmitz and Thompson helped extend the Bennies' lead to 10, 58-48, with 7:33 to play. St. Olaf could get no closer than six until the final minute of the game.

Ash's 24-rebound effort helped the Oles to a 40-31 advantage on the glass and a 20-4 edge in second-chance points. CSB turned 23 St. Olaf turnovers into 24 points to help offset the Oles' rebounding edge.

St. Olaf returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when Hamline visits Skoglund Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
