AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Williams College topped the St. Olaf College baseball team, 10-8, in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational.
Despite St. Olaf (8-4) leading by three after the seventh inning, Williams (8-1) scored five runs off six hits in the bottom of the eighth. The Oles generated a threat in the top of the ninth with runners on the corners and no outs, but were unable to convert.
Five Oles had multiple hits in the game, including two from
Jake Ossell,
Sam Pressman,
Dylan Blake,
Tommy McDonald and
Matthew Muller. McDonald added two RBI, along with two RBI, one hit and a run from
Luke Dahl.
Forrest Kobelt started on the mound for the first 4.2 innings and collected three strikeouts.
The Oles scored one run in the first inning and doubled their lead in the second inning with an RBI single from
Cameron Gray to make the score 2-0. St. Olaf held Williams to no hits and no runs in the bottom of the inning to remain on top by two runs.
The Ephs cut their deficit to one at 2-1 in the bottom of the third after a single to center field and a sacrifice fly to right field. St. Olaf answered with a two-run fourth inning when Rogers singled after two outs to advance Dahl to second and McDonald picked up two RBI off a triple down the right field line to extend the lead to 4-1.
In the top of the fifth Blake doubled to left field, followed by a Muller single to put two Oles on base, and Ossell was walked to load the bases. Dahl hit a sacrifice fly to left field and sent Blake home, making the score 5-1.
Williams answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs off four hits to even the score at 5-5. The Ephs started the inning with a single, followed by a walk to get runners on base and a sacrifice fly to center field accounted for the first run of the inning, followed by an RBI single to make the score 5-3.
The Ephs continued to rally with another RBI single and scored their fourth run of the inning off William's fourth single of the inning to even the score at 5-5.
St. Olaf regained its lead in the top of the seventh inning with three runs off four hits. Blake started the game at the plate and doubled down the left field line, followed by an RBI single from Muller to regain the lead at 6-5.
Ossell RBI singled to right field, followed by an RBI triple to right field from Dahl to make the score 8-5 in favor of the Oles. St. Olaf held Williams to two hits and no runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep the three-run lead heading into the eighth inning.
Williams rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning, recording five runs and six hits. The first three batters of the inning singled and the Ephs fourth single of the inning resulted in an RBI, followed by a three-run triple by William's Doug Schaffer. Schaffer scored off a single from the next batter that accounted for the final run of the game.
Despite St. Olaf registering 14 hits in the game, Williams had 15, including four in the fifth and six in the eighth inning that turned into nine runs.
The Oles look to bounce back on Wednesday, Mar. 27 in their final game of the Russmatt Invitational against Kalamazoo College, beginning at 9 a.m. central time.
