Baseball blanks Cobbers in game two to earn split

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team fell to Concordia College (Minn.), 9-1, and bounced back for a 12-0 victory in the second game of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.

St. Olaf (15-6, 6-2 MIAC) was held to three hits and committed four errors as Concordia (10-13, 4-5 MIAC) had nine hits in the first game. In the second game the Oles recorded a season-high 18 hits from nine hitters, including multiple hits from seven batters.

The Cobbers held St. Olaf scoreless for the first six innings while Concordia recorded nine hits and held the Oles to three.

Tommy McDonald led St. Olaf with two hits and Dylan Blake added a hit and a run. Hunter Barber tossed the first 4.1 innings and had three strikeouts.

The Cobbers took an early lead after a sacrifice fly accounted for the first run of the game. Concordia added two more runs in the top of the second inning to make the score 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Cobbers extended the lead to 7-0 after two RBI singles. A double from Mason Penske sent a Concordia runner home in the bottom of the sixth to account for the Cobbers final run of the game.

Sam Stuckmayer recorded had a sacrifice fly to right field that sent Blake home to make the score 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but two Oles were left on base to end the inning.

The Oles had a season-high 18 hits and no errors, while holding the Cobbers to just five hits in the contest.

Nine Oles posted hits in the game, including three hits, two runs and two RBI from Luke Dahl. McDonald had three hits, two runs and two RBI. Blake had two hits, two runs and two RBI, and Sam Pressman added two hits and two RBI.

Sam Westermeyer threw a complete game and picked up his fifth win of the season with five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, St. Olaf took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single from Pressman to right field as McDonald recorded the run.

The Oles added three more runs in the bottom of the second as Matthew Muller scored on an RBI single from Dahl down the right field line. TJ Rogers RBI singled to right field and two Oles scored on an error by the Cobbers to make the score 4-0 at the end of the second.

Ryan Torbenson tripled to right field to start a six-run fifth inning for the Oles and a double from Dahl sent Torbenson home. After Rogers singled, Dahl scored on a Concordia error to extend the lead to 8-0.

Blake picked up two RBI with a single that sent Rogers and Jake Ossell home, followed by a sacrifice fly from Pressman. An RBI single to right field from Torbenson picked up St. Olaf's final run of the game as the Oles finished the fifth inning with six runs on six hits and an error.

The Cobbers committed three errors in the game while St. Olaf had no errors and recorded three stolen bases.

The Oles are back to action on Friday, Apr. 19 for a MIAC doubleheader against Saint John's with the first game at Mark Almli Field beginning at 2:30 p.m.
