Baseball falls to Eagles twice

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf College baseball team fell to the University of Northwestern (Minn.), 3-2, and, 3-0, in a non-conference twin bill at Mark Almli Field on Monday afternoon.

In the first game, St. Olaf (21-12) evened the score in the bottom of the third inning, but Northwestern (20-14) scored a run in the fourth and held the Oles to four hits in the game to pick up the victory. The Oles had three hits in the second game, while the Eagles totaled seven to get the win.

After the Oles evened the score in the bottom of the third, Northwestern RBI doubled in the fourth and held St. Olaf scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Dylan Blake led the Oles with two hits and Tommy McDonald and Luke Dahl each had one.

The Eagles took an early lead in the first after a single to right field and doubled the deficit in the top of the second to make the score 2-0.

St. Olaf answered in the bottom of the third with two runs. Cameron Gray and Jac Childs were both walked, and Gray scored the Oles first run of the game to cut Northwestern's lead to 2-1. The Oles evened the score as Childs stole home, making the score 2-2 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth inning, an RBI double sent a Northwestern runner home as the Eagles regained the lead at 3-2. St. Olaf loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning after TJ Rogers was walked, McDonald singled and Blake was walked, but were unable to convert.

After keeping Northwestern scoreless in the sixth and seventh, Blake singled in the bottom of the seventh, followed by a double by Luke Dahl, but the Oles were unable to score.

Despite an errorless game by the Oles, the Eagles had six hits in the game, compared to just four from St. Olaf,and scored early to secure the victory.

St. Olaf was held to three hits, while the Eaglies tallied seven in the contest.

McDonald, Jake Ossell and Bobby Isbell each recorded a hit for the Oles. Jonah Smithson tossed an inning and had two strikeouts. Gray pitched his first innings of the season and closed the game, while recording one strikeout.

In the bottom of the first inning, McDonald singled through the right side and Blake was walked, but St. Olaf ended the inning with two Oles on base.

Northwestern broke the deadlock in the top of the third, and put two runs on the board, including an RBI single to right center that made the score 2-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Eagles scored the final run of the contest in the seventh inning on an RBI single to second base.

The Oles return to action on Wednesday, May 1 for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader at Bethel, with the first game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
