ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell to No. 13 Bethel University, 82-36, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest on Wednesday night at Robertson Center Gym.
After St. Olaf (6-8, 3-6 MIAC) trailed by just eight heading into the half, Bethel (14-0, 9-0 MIAC) outscored the Oles, 49-11, and forced 24 St. Olaf turnovers in the second half. The Royals are one of the last five remaining undefeated teams in country.
The Oles were led by first year
Rachel Kelly with 10 points and six rebounds. Sophomore
Camryn Scott added eight points and seven rebounds, and senior
Ella Skrien had seven points.
St. Olaf took a three-point lead, 6-3, two minutes into the game after senior
Britta Koenen had a three-point play for the Oles. Bethel answered with a mini 6-0 run midway through the quarter and took a five-point lead, 13-8, with three and a half minutes remaining in the first period.
Kelly scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter, including a layup a minute and a half into the period that got the Oles within three at 16-13. Bethel answered with an 8-0 run to take a 24-13 lead with 7:21 left in the half.
Two baskets from Scott got St. Olaf within single digits of Bethel at 28-19 midway through the quarter, and a layup from Skrien cut the deficit to seven with a 1:20 left in the half. After Bethel regained a 10-point lead, a Kelly basket got St. Olaf back within eight, 33-25, heading into the break.
Bethel opened the second half with a 14-0 run and held St. Olaf scoreless for the first 5:31 of the third period. A steal from junior
Keegan Mulvihill turned into a basket from Scott, but the Royals ended the quarter on a 14-0 run and took a 32-point lead heading into the final period.
First year
Lily Vinkemeier sank five three throws in the final period, but the Oles were held to just seven points in the quarter.
Despite St. Olaf outrebounding Bethel, 34-27, the Royals held the Oles to 28.9 percent shooting compared to 50 percent shooting from Bethel.
St. Olaf is back to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a road game at Macalester at 3 p.m.
