Glaaser nets pair in 3-2 loss at St. kate's

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior Johanna Glaaser recorded her first-career two-goal game, but St. Catherine University used a shorthanded goal early in the third period to defeat the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, 3-2, in the series opener between the two teams on Friday evening at Drake Arena.

Glaaser scored late in the first period to give St. Olaf (0-14-2, 0-9-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead and again late in the second to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods. Abbie Wetzel-Edstrom broke the deadlock on a St. Olaf power play at 4:46 of the third to give St. Catherine (7-8-0, 4-5-0 MIAC) the win.

With just 1:15 remaining in the opening period, Glaaser tallied her first goal of the night to break the deadlock off an assist from junior Mary Kate Eiden, who assisted on both of the senior's goals in the game.

St. Catherine's Laura Denchfield scored the game's next two goals, scoring at 6:42 and 15:23 of the second, to give the hosts a 2-1 lead, but Glaaser answered exactly three minutes after Denchfield's second goal to even it up after two. Eiden against assisted on Glaaser's tally to notch her first-career multi-point game, while Glaaser's two goals gave her a team-high four for the season.

The Wildcats were whistled for a minor penalty at 4:27 of the third period but netted the game-winning goal just 19 seconds later on a goal by Wetzel-Edstrom. St. Olaf earned a late power play in the final four minutes but was unable to convert as St. Catherine held on to win the series opener.

The Oles and Wildcats wrap up their series on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
