Women's basketball falls in OT at Concordia after fourth-quarter rally

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime before eventually falling to Concordia-Moorhead, 89-85, on Wednesday evening at Memorial Auditorium.

Concordia (9-13, 7-10 MIAC) used an 11-0 run to take a 69-58 lead a little more than a minute into the fourth quarter before St. Olaf (8-14, 5-12 MIAC) rallied to force the game to overtime. The two teams combined to shoot 0-for-7 from the field in the extra five minutes, but the Cobbers went 9-for-12 at the free-throw line to escape with the win and remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

First year Rachel Kelly led all scorers with a career-high 25 points and added nine rebounds before fouling out with 2:53 remaining in overtime. Sophomore Camryn Scott recorded 13 points and eight rebounds before fouling out just 12 seconds into the extra session.

First year Grace Hegland and sophomore Rose Bauernfeind were also in double figures for the Oles off the bench. Hegland scored a career-high 11 points and Bauernfeind provided a career-best 10.

Both teams shot an even 50.0 percent from the field in the opening quarter but the Cobbers led 26-21 after one thanks to four early three-pointers from four different players.

A three-pointer from junior Keegan Mulvihill with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter gave the Oles their first lead of the quarter. Concordia connected on three three-pointers in the final 2:55 of the quarter but one from Hegland in the final minute tied the game at 41-41 at the half.

Neither team led by more than three in the third quarter until the Cobbers scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 65-58 lead after three. After a Hegland three-pointer tied it at 58-58 with 3:10 left in the third, Concordia held St. Olaf scoreless the rest of the quarter.

The run continued early in the fourth for the Cobbers, who scored the first four points of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 69-58. With the Oles down 70-60, Kelly hit a three-pointer and converted a three-point play to quickly make it a four-point game with seven minutes to go in regulation.

St. Olaf gradually chipped away at the Concordia lead and took a 78-77 lead with 1:51 left on a layup by Kelly. The Cobbers scored the next three before two Kelly free throws knotted it again at 80-80 with 47 seconds remaining.

Concordia missed a pair of free throws with 43 seconds on the clock before both teams had a chance to win it but came up empty on their final possessions of regulation.

In the overtime, Beseman drilled four-straight free throws to give the Cobbers an 85-80 lead 2:07 in. Five free throws from Hegland kept the Oles with one, 86-65, with 20 seconds remaining but Autumn Thompson hit two at the line three seconds later before a St. Olaf turnover. Thompson went 1-of-2 at the line with three seconds to go to put the game out of reach.

St. Olaf made a season-high 12 three-pointers and committed a season-low 12 turnovers in the loss. Concordia was 25-for-38 (65.8 percent) from the charity stripe and outscored the Oles by 10 from the line.

Six Cobbers scored in double figures led by Thompson's 20 points, which included four three-pointers. Emily Beseman went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line on her way to 19 points, while Elizabeth Birkemeyer, Bailee Larson and Rachel Hoernemann had 11 apiece. Mary Sem pitched in with 10.

St. Olaf takes on crosstown rival Carleton on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. at West Gym.
