WINONA, Minn. – Sophomore
Jackie LaFaive netted a goal for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in an 8-1 loss to Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in the first game of the team's series on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Saint Mary's (7-12-3, 4-9-2 MIAC) used three-goal flurries in the first and second periods to build a 6-0 lead after two. After the Cardinals stretched their lead to 8-0 in the third, LaFaive got St. Olaf (0-20-2, 0-15-0 MIAC) on the board with 4:15 remaining.
Courtney Moser netted a pair of goals in the win for Saint Mary's, while Jordan Modjeski had a team-high four points on a goal and three assists. Seven Cardinals scored in the game and 11 had at least one point.
In the first, goals from Anya Hafiz, Moser and Sydney Green in the space of 4:39 lifted Saint Mary's to a 3-0 lead after one after the game was scoreless for the first nine-plus minutes.
The Cardinals scored three times in the first 7:07 of the second period to extend their lead to 6-0 and added two more a little more than five minutes apart in the first 11 minutes of the third.
LaFaive registered her second goal of the season off an assist from classmate
Maddie Anderson at 15:45 of the third. The assist was Anderson's third of the year.
Ary Ziakas picked up the win with 10 saves for Saint Mary's, while sophomore
Ivy Shonka had a team-high 19 saves for St. Olaf. First year
Taylor Smith stopped 14 of the 15 shots she faced for the Oles.
St. Olaf holds its Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 15 prior to a 2 p.m. puck drop against the Cardinals at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
