Women's basketball eases to 84-39 win over Crown in opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior K'Lynn Lewis and junior Rachel Kelly had 17 points apiece to lead five Oles in double figures as the St. Olaf College women's basketball team opened its season with an 84-39 victory over Crown College on Tuesday evening at Skoglund Center.

Lewis shot 7-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc, and Kelly was 8-for-13 from the floor while adding six rebounds and five assists to lead the way for St. Olaf (1-0). The Oles jumped out to leads of 27-9 after one quarter and 50-16 at halftime on their way to the 45-point win over Crown (1-1).

The 45-point margin of victory was the largest for St. Olaf since a 110-50 victory over St. Kate's on Dec. 12, 1998, while the 39 points allowed were the lowest total for an opponent since a 51-34 win at Martin Luther on Dec. 15, 2015.

First year Paige Yagodinski was 4-for-6 from behind the arc on her way to 12 points, junior Sophie Olmen went 3-for-4 from deep to add 11 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Cayden Botten contributed 10 points and four boards off the bench for St. Olaf. The Oles shot at least 55.0 percent in each of the first three quarters and finished at 51.5 percent (35-for-68) for the game, including going 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from behind the arc.

St. Olaf enjoyed advantages of 30-5 in bench points, 48-12 in points in the paint, and 21-5 in second-chance points in the win. The Oles also had 24 assists on 35 made field goals.

Olmen drained back-to-back three-pointers 20 seconds apart to cap a 14-2 start for St. Olaf over the game's first 4:38 to force an early timeout by Crown. All three of Olmen's three-point makes in the game came in the opening 10 minutes to help the Oles to a 27-9 lead after 10 minutes. St. Olaf limited Crown to three made field goals and 17.6 percent shooting in the quarter.

The Oles again limited the Storm to three made field goals in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors by a 23-7 margin to push their lead to 50-16 at halftime. St. Olaf held Crown scoreless over the final 7:18 of the quarter, scoring the final 17 points of the half to go into the locker room up by 34. Kelly (11), Olmen (11), and Lewis (10) were all in double figures in scoring at the break, as the Oles shot 57.1 percent (20-for-35) from the field and 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from three-point range in the half.

In the third quarter, St. Olaf was 11-for-14 (78.6 percent) from the field and had assists on eight of its nine field goals. The Oles did most of their damage in the paint in the quarter, scoring 18 of their 25 points from in close, and led 75-31 after three before being held to nine points over the final 10 minutes.

St. Olaf hits the road to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday, Nov. 20 for a 1 p.m. tip-off at St. Kate's in St. Paul.
