Cobbers take series opener from women's hockey, 8-2

MOORHEAD, Minn. – First years Heather Sager and Kate Carfagnini scored second-period goals for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in an 8-2 loss at Concordia-Moorhead on Friday evening at Moorhead Sports Center.

Sager and Carfagnini each netted their second goals of the season in the second period for St. Olaf (4-3-0, 0-3-0 MIAC), but Concordia (3-2-0, 1-2-0 MIAC) broke open a 2-0 game after one period with a six-goal middle period. Jerica Friese led the way for the Cobbers with two goals and two assists, while McKenzie Oelkers had three assists and Brenna Mjoness scored twice.

Goals from Lexi Woodward and Friese 10 minutes apart in the opening period gave the hosts a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes before the teams combined for eight goals in a chaotic second period. Mjoness extended Concordia's lead to 3-0 at the 5:22 mark before junior Annika Patterson set up a goal by Sager at 6:30.

The Cobbers scored the game's next four goals over a span of 3:04 to open up a 7-1 lead before Carfagnini scored off assists from first year Mandy Moran and junior Maddie Anderson on the power play at 13:43 of the second. Moran's assist was her first collegiate point.

Concordia held a 47-27 advantage in shots on goal in the game and was 3-for-4 on the power play in the win. Kiana Flaig earned the win by making 20 saves in 46:41 in net for the Cobbers, while senior Ivy Shonka suffered the loss after surrendering four goals and making 16 saves over the first 28:54 of the game for the Oles.

The two teams close out their series on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
