RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team held fourth-ranked UW-River Falls to one goal over the first 51:03 before the Falcons scored a pair of late goals to complete a 3-0 non-conference victory on Tuesday evening at Hunt Arena.
UW-River Falls (8-1-0) got a first-period goal from Erin Olson to take the lead before Alyson Niebur and Sophia Leong netted goals in the final 11-plus minutes to seal the win. St. Olaf (5-4-0) got a season-high 36 saves from senior
Grace Boswell-Healey in the loss.
The Falcons outshot the Oles by a 15-1 count in the opening period but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the first intermission after Boswell-Healey stopped 14 of the 15 shots UW-River Falls generated in the period. Collins scored the lone goal of the period unassisted at the 16:07 mark.
St. Olaf had a power play late in the first period and another midway through the second but was unable to get on the board. After having just one shot on goal in the opening 20 minutes, the Oles had nine in the second period, but neither team was able to score in the middle period.
UW-River Falls maintained its 1-0 lead until Niebur's goal at the 8:57 mark gave the Falcons a two-goal cushion. Leong added a second insurance goal with a little under five minutes remaining to close out the scoring.
Pistol Cowden stopped all 12 shots she faced to record the shutout for the Falcons.
St. Olaf is off until returning to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at home against Saint Mary's on Friday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.
