Iona Welsch tied the game at 1-1 early in the third period for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team before Saint Mary's University scored 13 seconds into overtime to top the Oles, 2-1, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Saint Mary's (6-3-0, 5-1-0 MIAC) got a power-play goal from Nina Langley at the 6:21 mark of the opening period and held the lead until Welsch got St. Olaf (5-6-0, 1-5-0 MIAC) on the board just 1:32 into the third period. After the teams went to overtime tied at 1-1, Kas Kingston won it for the Cardinals just 13 seconds into the 3-on-3 extra session to give Saint Mary's all three points.
Langley, who scored the game-winning power-play goal at the 16:03 mark of the third period on Friday night, opened the scoring a little over six minutes into the game with her second power-play tally of the weekend to get Saint Mary's out to an early lead.
The Cardinals limited the Oles to eight shots on goal over the first two periods in holding onto the one-goal advantage until Welsch struck with her third goal of the season 92 seconds into the third period. First year
Jessica Wernli picked up her second assist of the season on the goal, while junior
Samantha Martin collected her first point of the year with a helper.
Senior
Ivy Shonka made 14 saves after Welsch's goal to help St. Olaf push the game to overtime but was beaten on the first attempt of overtime by Kingston. Kingston also scored for Saint Mary's in Friday's 2-1 win at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Shonka made a season-high 29 saves in the loss for the Oles, while Jordan Keeley logged an 11-save shutout for the Cardinals. Saint Mary's did not commit a penalty in the game and were 1-for-3 on the power play thanks to Langley's tally.
St. Olaf takes on non-conference foe Northland College in a pair of road games next weekend. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 7 p.m. at Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland, Wis. on Friday, Dec. 10.
