St. Kate's downs women's soccer behind two early goals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting St. Catherine University scored twice in the first eight minutes on its way to a 2-1 victory over the St. Olaf College women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Lauren Witte and Sofia Campbell scored in the span of 3:17 early on for St. Kate's (2-0-0), which held on in the second half despite a 30th-minute goal from Annie Reichhoff for St. Olaf (0-1-0). The Oles were playing their first non-exhibition contest of the spring.

Witte opened the scoring in the fifth minute for the Wildcats, running onto a ball in behind the St. Olaf backline, evading a rushing Grace Sprangers in goal, and finishing into an empty net. A little over three minutes later, Witte found Campbell in front of the net with a centering pass to double the St. Kate's lead.

The Oles got one goal back before halftime when Reichhoff capitalized on a short back pass intended for the Wildcats' goalkeeper and slotted the ball home. Reichhoff has scored two of St. Olaf's three goals through five contests this spring.

With St. Kate's still holding onto a one-goal lead, St. Olaf nearly found a tying goal in the 82nd minute when Lily Hanlon's shot from the left side of the box came off hit the right post near the corner of the goal.

The Wildcats held a 13-10 advantage in shots in the game, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Kate Praetz made three saves to pick up the win, while Sprangers and Brynne Davis combined for six saves while playing one half each for St. Olaf.

The Oles host Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m.
