NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) blanked the St. Olaf College baseball team, 11-0, in seven innings to salvage a game from the head-to-head series between the two teams on Monday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.
Saint Mary's (19-10, 13-7 MIAC) broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the top of the third inning and scored in each of the final five innings. After sweeping the Cardinals in Winona on Saturday, St. Olaf (9-2, 2-1 MIAC) was held to six hits and was shut out for the first time this spring.
Jake Mercado threw six shutout innings for Saint Mary's, working around six hits and five walks, to pick up the win. Senior
TJ Rogers had three of St. Olaf's six hits and also stole three bases.
After putting up zeroes in the first two innings, starter
Forrest Kobelt ran into trouble in the third, as Saint Mary's capitalized on four walks and a hit batter to score five runs on two hits. Justin Weinberg had a two-run single to start the scoring for the first of his four hits in the game.
The Cardinals added single runs in the fourth and fifth before scoring twice in the sixth and seventh to finish off the scoring.
St. Olaf used four pitchers in the game, including sophomore
Antonio Angel Gonzales, who made his first appearance on the mound by tossing the seventh inning.
The Oles look to bounce back with a doubleheader at Bethel on Tuesday, April 27 starting at 2:30 p.m.
