Bode goes 5-for-6, softball sweeps Scots in home opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Ally Bode was 5-for-6 at the plate and drove in four runs to propel the St. Olaf College softball team to wins over Macalester College by scores of 10-2 and 7-6 to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play Saturday afternoon at Mabel Shirley Field.

Bode was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the opener and 3-for-3 with the go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two for St. Olaf (4-2, 2-0 MIAC). The twin bill marked the first games in two weeks for the Oles and the first for Macalester (0-2, 0-2 MIAC) this season.

Senior Julie Graf picked up the victory in both games, striking out 15 in a complete game in game one before recording all five of her outs by strikeout in relief in game two.

After the Scots got two runs off Graf in the first, the senior settled in and allowed just three hits in her complete-game win. Graf did not allow a run after the first inning and got 15 of her 18 outs by strikeout.

St. Olaf countered Macalester's two-run first with a four-run opening frame of its own, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Katie Weisheit, a two-run single by Bode, and an error by the Scots.

In the second, St. Olaf plated two more runs on a Macalester error to stretch its lead to 6-2. Junior Tarah DeCroock provided a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third for her third hit in the opening three innings.

The Oles added two more runs in the fourth, one on Bode's third run-producing hit of the game, and ended the game with another in the bottom of the sixth.

DeCroock, Bode, and Weisheit combined for seven of St. Olaf's nine hits in the game. Weisheit reached base three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs.

Sophomore Kaleigh Santmyer and Bode both delivered two-run singles in a four-run sixth to help the Oles rally late in game two to complete the sweep. The four-run frame came after Mandy Morrical broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to give the Scots a 6-3 lead.

In addition to Bode's three-hit performance, three Oles registered a pair of hits, including Santmyer, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI. Senior Hannah Matthies was 2-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run, while sophomore Maya Patty was 2-for-3 and scored once.

After the Scots again scored twice in the first, St. Olaf responded immediately when Matthies drove a three-run shot over the fence in left to put the Oles on top, 3-2. Morrical knocked in the first of her four RBI in the top of the second to tie the score at 3-3.

The score remained tied until Morrical homered down the left-field line in the top of the sixth. Down 6-3, St. Olaf's first three batters reached base to fill the bases in the next half inning. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Santmyer made it a one-run game with a single off the pitcher's glove and into center field. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Bode provided the go-ahead two-run base hit through the left side.

After entering the game for the final two outs of the top of the sixth, Graf recorded five strikeouts and stranded the tying run at second in the seventh with her 20th strikeout of the afternoon.

The Oles head to St. Paul to take on the University of St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
