St. Thomas tops No. 21 softball to claim MIAC Playoff title

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The fourth-seeded University of St. Thomas claimed its 15th Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff title by defeating the top-seeded and No. 21-ranked St. Olaf College softball team, 3-0, on Sunday at Mabel Shirley Field.

Kierstin Anderson-Glass threw her second shutout in as many days to pitch St. Thomas (28-8) to the title, which was the 15th in the tournament's 17 seasons for the Tommies who punched their ticket to next week's NCAA Tournament. St. Olaf (24-6) will await word on a potential at-large bid into the national tournament until Monday's 1 p.m. ET selection show on NCAA.com.

Anderson-Glass scattered five hits over the complete game with one intentional walk and seven strikeouts to out-duel Julie Graf, who allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the complete game.

St. Thomas plated a run in the top of the first when Coryn Jacobson was hit by the game's first pitch, stole second and third, and scored on a single through the right side by Anderson-Glass.

The Oles had at least one hit in each of the first four innings, including back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the second, but were unable to score. After Anderson-Glass escaped trouble in the second, the Tommies doubled their lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sarah Hudson to score Jacobson.

The score remained 2-0 until the seventh when St. Thomas pushed across an insurance run on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Megan Baniecke. Anderson-Glass retired the final 10 St. Olaf batters of the game to pick up the 20th postseason win of her career.
