Women's tennis bows out of MIAC Playoffs to top-seeded Tommies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The sixth-seeded St. Olaf College women's tennis team bowed out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs in the semifinals with a 5-0 loss to the top-seeded University of St. Thomas on Friday at Baseline Tennis Center.

As the first No. 6 seed to appear in the semifinals of the tournament, St. Olaf (5-6) saw its season come to a close after dropping all three doubles matches, including tightly-contested matches at the top-two spots, and the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches to St. Thomas (12-3).

With the win, the Tommies advanced to face No. 2 seed Gustavus in the championship match on Saturday, May 8. St. Thomas edged the Gusties, 5-4, in the match that decided the regular-season title on April 25.

Sabrina Barboza and Allie Prokosch saw their five-match winning streak come to an end after dropping their No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker, while Emily Otteson and Greta Prokosch had their four-match winning streak snapped with a narrow 8-6 defeat at No. 2 doubles. The Tommies also picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles in the doubles sweep.

Jannah El Nemr and Olivia Paradise provided victories for St. Thomas in the first two singles matches to finish to give the Tommies the five points they needed to advance. Paradise topped Allie Prokosch by a 6-4, 6-4 margin at No. 2 singles, while El Nemr posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Otteson at No. 3 singles.

St. Thomas had also won the first sets in each of the other four singles matches, including a tight 7-5 first set at No. 1 singles in the match between Barboza and Nicole Snezhko. After dropping the first set at No. 4 singles, Greta Prokosch led 4-1 in the second set when the match was halted due to the Tommies having the win secured.

The semifinal appearance was St. Olaf's first since 2016 and the program's eighth in the tournament's 14 seasons.
