NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team dropped its lone match of the fall season to visiting Southwest Minnesota State University by a 6-3 margin on Saturday morning at Carlson Courts.
First year
Olha Zubarieva had a hand in two of the three points for St. Olaf (0-1), winning her No. 2 singles match and pairing with junior
Allie Prokosch for a win at No. 1 doubles. The Oles also got a win from first years
Sarah Clark and
Jane Spading at No. 3 doubles, but Southwest Minnesota State (3-1) claimed five of the six singles matches to overcome a 2-1 doubles deficit and claim the win.
St. Olaf took a 2-1 lead into singles after getting an 8-6 win from Prokosch and Zubarieva and an 8-4 victory from Clark and Spading in doubles play. The Mustangs put their first point on the board by winning a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Zubarieva closed out her No. 2 singles match in a second-set tiebreaker to post a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win in her collegiate debut, but the visitors used four straight-set singles wins and a super-tiebreaker win at No. 5 singles to pick up the victory. Clark's match at No. 5 singles was the lone match of the day to go the distance but she eventually was edged in the super tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin.
St. Olaf will return to the courts in the spring with a Friday, Feb. 18 match against Bethel.
