WAVERLY, Iowa – Sophomore
Addison Cortinas netted her first collegiate goal in the closing minutes but it was not enough for the St. Olaf College women's soccer team in a narrow 2-1 loss to No. 24 Wartburg College on Tuesday at Salzwedel Field.
Wartburg (3-0-0) built a 2-0 lead on goals by Gabby Corday and Joy Smith before Cortinas got St. Olaf (1-1-1) on the board in the 88th minute. After Cortinas' goal, the Knights killed off most of the remaining time in the offensive end until the Oles got one last chance when
Hayley Hoffmann fired wide from the left side in the game's final minute.
The hosts capitalized on an early corner kick in the 15th minute to open the scoring as Corday got on the end of the corner by Sarah Campbell. Senior
Brynne Davis made five saves in the opening half for St. Olaf to keep it a one-goal game.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Oles came close to tying it up when
Mae Guetschow drove to the top of the box and curled a left-footed shot towards the lower-left corner, but Marissa Lopez got down to make the save.
Less than 10 minutes later, Davis dove to her right to keep out a shot by Katie Berglund, who got on the end of a free kick played into the St. Olaf box. The Knights eventually doubled their lead in the 79th minute when Annie Place slid the ball in front to Joy Smith to make it a 2-0 game.
Cortinas brought the Oles back within a goal with less than three minutes remaining, finishing off a loose ball in the box shortly after
Salem Birkholz hit the crossbar with a shot from the top of the box on the right side. The goal was the first conceded by Wartburg in 283:26 this season.
Davis suffered her first loss of the season despite making nine saves for St. Olaf, while Lopez picked up the victory with four saves for Wartburg.
After three-straight road games to start the season, the Oles host Finlandia in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.
