ST. PETER, Minn. – Senior
Ivy Shonka made a career-high 41 saves for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in a 4-0 loss to sixth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Arena.
Shonka had 33 of her 41 saves over the first two periods for St. Olaf (7-8-0, 1-7-0 MIAC), which held nationally-ranked Gustavus (10-2-0, 6-0-0 MIAC) scoreless until the final minute of the opening period. The Gusties added a pair of goals in the second period and one more in the third to pick up their second of back-to-back shutouts this weekend.
Gustavus held an 18-1 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but had to wait until the final minute for the game's first goal. Shonka saved the first 17 shots she faced before Clara Billings got the Gusties on the board at the 19:24 mark.
In a similar manner to the first period, the Oles kept the Gusties at bay until late in the second period, but Gustavus scored twice in the span of 1:01 over the final five minutes of the period to stretch its lead to 3-0 after two. Emily Howard and Emily Olson, who also had two assists in the game, tallied the goals for the Gusties.
After scoring a hat trick the night before at St. Olaf Ice Arena, Brooke Power scored the lone goal of the final period for the hosts to complete the scoring at 17:33 of the third. Maria Widen earned the win in net for the Gusties after playing the first 33:03 of the game.
St. Olaf travels to Blaine to start its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series against Bethel on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
