Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tangen's big fourth quarter helps women's basketball complete sweep of Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. – First year Sarah Tangen matched her career high with 17 points and junior Rachel Kelly scored 17 of her own in her return to the lineup as the St. Olaf College women's basketball team picked up a 72-60 road win over Macalester College on Wednesday evening at the Leonard Center.

Kelly had 10 of her 17 points in the opening half and Tangen scored 15 of her 17 after the break for St. Olaf (5-10, 4-8 MIAC), which picked up its second-straight road win and completed the sweep of Macalester (7-8, 5-7 MIAC). The Oles shot over 50.0 percent from the field for the third time this season, finishing at 51.0 percent (25-for-49).

Tangenwas 5-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line to tie her 17-point performance from last Wednesday's win at St. Scholastica. Kelly provided a lift off the bench with 17 points in 22 minutes for the Oles, who got a career-high 13 points from junior Grace Hegland and 10 more from junior Cassie Fix.

Emma LaFrenz led four Scots in double figures with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Celine Sabbagh, Katherine Norquist, and Solana Cushing all had 11 points for the hosts, who had a 19-5 edge in second-chance points but could not overcome St. Olaf's 24-4 advantage in fast-break points.

Neither team led by more than four points in the opening quarter as the teams were knotted at 13-13 after 10 minutes. The Oles scored 10 of their 13 points in the paint and got a jumper from junior Sophie Olmen on their final possession of the quarter tie the game headed to the second.

Kelly scored all 10 of her first-half points in the second quarter, including three-straight buckets to give St. Olaf a 19-16 lead with 6:36 to go in the first half. The Oles took their largest lead of the night at 31-21 with 1:10 remaining in the half on back-to-back baskets by Fix and Kelly before the Scots scored the final four points to get within six at the break.

St. Olaf shot 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from the field in the third quarter, but Macalester chipped away at the Oles' lead to get within four, 48-44, after three. After trailing by as many as eight, the Scots got within two on a three-pointer by Cushing with 28 seconds remaining, but Tangen found Hegland for a layup on the next possession to close out the quarter.

Tangen scored 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter, making both of her three-pointers and all four of her free throws to help the Oles close out the win. The first year drained two three-pointers in the first 2:03 of the quarter to push St. Olaf's lead to 57-46 and the Oles led by at least five the rest of the way. The Scots cut a 13-point deficit to five with 2:43 to go, but St. Olaf made 13-of-16 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The Oles play their next four games at home, beginning with a matchup against St. Kate's on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.
