NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Bethel University rode an early goal from Brynn Swenson to a 1-0 victory over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series finale between the two teams on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Swenson scored just 2:17 into the game for Bethel (5-5-0, 3-2-0 MIAC), which completed the weekend sweep of St. Olaf (7-10-0, 1-9-0 MIAC) with its second-straight shutout. After making 22 saves in a 2-0 win the night before in Blaine, Mallory Tidona stopped all 25 shots she faced to log the shutout for the Royals.
Just over two minutes into the game, Bethel capitalized on a fortunate bounce in front of the net to score the game's only goal, as Swenson fired the buck home after a blocked shot fell to her just outside the crease. Makenzie Baker and Taylor Ryan earned assists on the goal.
St. Olaf had three power plays in the second period but was unable to capitalize on any of them. The Oles' best scoring chance of the game fell to first year
Kate Carfagnini with about nine minutes remaining in the third period, but Tidona saved Carfagnini's backhand attempt after the first year drove towards the net between the circles.
After being beaten on the early goal, senior
Ivy Shonka saved the final 22 shots she faced in the loss for St. Olaf, including making 10 saves in the final period to keep the Oles in the game.
St. Olaf continues MIAC play against Augsburg University next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis on Friday, Jan. 28.
