NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Sadie Klassen gave the St. Olaf College women's soccer team an early 1-0 lead, but regionally-ranked Carleton College scored the game's final three goals to pick up a 3-1 win in the matchup of the crosstown rivals on Saturday afternoon at Bell Field.
Klassen scored from the spot in the 15th minute for her fourth goal in the last two games to provide St. Olaf (4-5-1, 2-2-1 MIAC) a 1-0 advantage in the early stages, but Carleton (9-1-0, 5-0-0 MIAC) tied the game 10 minutes later and scored twice in a 10-minute span of the second half to remain unbeaten in conference play. The Knights were ranked No. 4 in Region IX in this week's United Soccer Coaches regional poll.
After scoring a four-minute hat trick against the College of St. Scholastica on Tuesday, Klassen stepped up to bury the Oles' first penalty kick of the season after a foul in the box less than 15 minutes into the game. The goal was the sophomore's team-leading sixth of the season, as Klassen has scored or assisted on seven of St. Olaf's 13 goals this season.
Carleton tied the game in the 25th minute when Ashlyn Haigh scored on a scramble in the box following a corner kick for the Knights. Kathryn Kresse scored both of Carleton's goals in the second half, breaking the deadlock in the 48th minute before giving the hosts an insurance goal a little over eight minutes later.
Keya Mookencherry recorded the win for the Knights with a three-save afternoon, while junior
Maddie Black took the loss with four saves for the Oles. Shots in the game were 11-6 in favor of Carleton, including a 7-4 advantage for the hosts in shots on goal.
St. Olaf is off during the week before hosting the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
