Anderson has hand in all three goals, women's soccer downs Cardinals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Tessa Anderson had a goal and two assists as the St. Olaf College women's soccer team picked up a 3-0 victory against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at a wet and windy Rolf Mellby Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Anderson scored the lone goal of the first half and assisted on both second-half goals for St. Olaf (6-5-1, 4-2-1 MIAC), which ran its home record to 6-2-0 this season with the win. The victory over Saint Mary's (5-5-2, 2-3-2 MIAC) was the Oles' third win in their last four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contests and moved St. Olaf up to a tie for third in the conference standings.

Sophomore Sadie Klassen – the two-time reigning MIAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week – scored for the fourth-straight game and added an assist, while junior Reiley Prueter scored her first-career goal for St. Olaf.

After a scoreless opening 30-plus minutes, Anderson opened the scoring for the Oles, tucking the ball into the lower-right corner after junior Marissa Lindaman and Klassen combined at the top of the box to play in Anderson. Lindaman's assist was her first of the season and the second of her career.

St. Olaf led 1-0 at halftime before scoring twice in the first 10-plus minutes of the second half to build a three-goal cushion. Klassen scored her sixth goal in the last four games – her MIAC-leading seventh in seven conference games this season – in the 52nd minute off a pass from Anderson to make it 2-0.

Less than five minutes later, Prueter extended the Oles' lead by pouncing on a loose ball just outside the six-yard box and firing the ball into the top-right corner after an Anderson cross from the right end line was blocked by a Saint Mary's defender.

Junior Maddie Black earned her second-straight shutout by saving all three shots she faced in the game for St. Olaf, which held a 14-11 advantage in shots in the game, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Alexis Nguyen took the loss for the Cardinals after allowing three goals and making three saves in the opening 61-plus minutes.

The Oles travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
