Women's soccer drops regular-season finale to St. Kate's

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team yielded a pair of goals early in the second half in a 2-1 loss to St. Catherine University in its regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

After a scoreless first half, St. Kate's (11-4-3, 7-2-2 MIAC) broke through with two goals in the space of less than six minutes in the first 10 minutes of the second half and went on to hold off St. Olaf (9-6-1, 7-3-1 MIAC) late on. Sophomore Sadie Klassen scored with four minutes remaining to get the Oles within a goal.

With the loss and a tie in Saturday's game between Saint Ben's and Carleton, St. Olaf will be the No. 4 seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs. The Oles will host No. 5 seed Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at a time yet to be determined.

St. Kate's opened the scoring in the 49th minute when Natalie Pfleger got in behind the St. Olaf backline and scored to give the visitors the lead. Less than six minutes later, Lauren Witte doubled the Wildcats' lead with her eighth goal of the season. Witte's goal came minutes after Kate Praetz made a leaping save to parry a shot by senior Tessa Anderson over the bar.

Klassen got one goal back for St. Olaf with exactly four minutes remaining, tucking the ball into the lower-right corner from inside the box after being set up by first year Cat Duffy-Shaw. The goal was Klassen's eighth in conference play this season, tying her for the most in the conference, which Duffy-Shaw earned her fourth assist of the year.

St. Kate's scored with both of its shots on goal in the game but held a 16-8 advantage in shots. Praetz had two saves in the win for the Wildcats, while junior Maddie Black took the loss for the Oles. Black had won her last five starts dating back to Oct. 1.

St. Olaf won the regular-season meeting with Saint Mary's, 3-0, at home on Wednesday, Oct. 12, but the Cardinals have won their last six games since then, including a 1-0 win over St. Scholastica on Saturday. Tuesday's other quarterfinal matchup will see No. 6 seed Macalester visit No. 3 seed St. Kate's.
