Women's soccer sees season end in MIAC semifinals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The fourth-seeded St. Olaf College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 loss at top-seeded Carleton College in the semifinals of the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer Playoffs on Wednesday afternoon at Bell Field.

St. Olaf (10-7-1) fell behind 1-0 less than 15 minutes in before tying the game at the break in a 37th-minute goal by senior Tessa Anderson. The score remained locked at a goal apiece until Carleton (13-1-3) scored twice over the final 10-plus minutes to advance to Saturday's championship game.

The game brought an end to the careers of St. Olaf's seven seniors: Grace Sprangers, Mae Guetschow, Rachel Tanner, Salem Birkholz, Zoe Jeske, Tessa Anderson, and Lily Hanlon.

The Oles were coming off their first-ever victory in the MIAC Playoffs the day before – a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Saint Mary's – and were appearing in the semifinals of the tournament for the fourth time in program history. The playoff appearance was St. Olaf's sixth since the tournament began in 2003 and its first since 2018.

The Knights, who will host third-seeded St. Kate's in the title game on Saturday after the Wildcats knocked the second-seeded College of Saint Benedict out in penalty kicks in Wednesday's other semifinal, took an early lead on an unassisted goal by Cate Patterson just under 15 minutes into the game.

St. Olaf answered inside the final 10 minutes of the half when first year Megan Timmerman played Anderson in on goal with a through ball and Anderson took care of the rest for her ninth goal of the season. All nine of Anderson's goals came in the Oles' 12 games, as she wrapped up her career in the top 10 in program history in goals (24, ninth) and points (55, tied for eighth).

The game remained tied all the way until the 80th minute, when Loren Arzayus scored from a sharp angle following a cross from the near the end line on the right side from Kathryn Kresse for the eventual game-winning goal for the hosts. The Knights added an insurance goal less than three minutes on a free kick by Hadley Twichell.

Carleton, which was ranked fourth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll, held advantages of 18-10 in shots and 10-2 in shot on goal in the game. Junior Maddie Black had seven saves in the loss for the Oles.

St. Olaf wraps up its first season under head coach Becky Maines with its first 10-win season since 2018. The Oles also matched the program record by winning seven MIAC games during the regular season.
